  • Laws and Rules
Colorado liquor laws, in plain terms.

Colorado holds liquor licensees to a detailed set of laws and rules. Alcohol Beverage Training was built to turn those rules into plain, usable knowledge, so you can protect your license and serve responsibly. This page explains the essentials and points you to the official state source.

The basics

What Responsible Vendor means in Colorado.

Colorado offers liquor licensees Responsible Vendor status when their sellers and servers complete approved training. Earning that status shows the state you have trained your staff to serve alcohol lawfully, and it can matter a great deal if a violation is ever alleged against your business.

Colorado does not recognize standard self-paced online courses for Responsible Vendor training. The training has to be live, in a classroom or by live streaming, so participants can interact with the instructor in real time. Alcohol Beverage Training is approved by the Colorado Liquor Enforcement Division to deliver this training, in person and by live streaming, and in Spanish.

ABT founder Patrick Maroney is the former Director of the Colorado Liquor Enforcement Division. He helped write and implement the modern Colorado liquor rules, so the people teaching the rules are the people who shaped them.

The rules that keep you and your patrons safe

At a high level, Colorado liquor laws cover four areas every seller and server needs to know. Your class walks through each one in depth.

  • Checking Identification
Confirming a customer is of legal age, recognizing valid and altered IDs, and understanding your obligations before you serve.
  • Over-Service and Visible Intoxication
Spotting the signs that someone has had enough and knowing when service has to stop.
  • Hours and Conditions of Sale
When and how alcohol may be sold, and the conditions that come attached to your license type.
  • Liability and Dram-Shop Exposure
How over-service can create legal liability for you and your business, and how responsible service protects you.

The official rules live with the state. The Colorado Liquor Enforcement Division publishes the current liquor laws, rules, and regulations. Always rely on the state published text for the exact statute and rule language. Open the state rules page

  • Put It Into Practice
Learn the rules from the people who wrote them.

A live ABT class turns these laws into plain, practical knowledge your whole team can use.
